Is there a difference between the recording/audio engineering techniques from today versus those of the 90s?

It seems to me (just from a listener's standpoint) that there is something different in the sound of music from the 90s as compared to the music of today. Personally, I listen to country music, and I was curious if anyone knew of any major changes in how music is created.
