Can you leave a university and take cles in a community college, then return back?

I am a junior transfer student I recently got into UCSD but because of a personal issue I might have to drop out and go back home to LA. So I was wondering if I do so, can I take cles in a community college in the meantime and earn credits towards my major than come back as a continuing student? Do I have to reapply and can I to other universities? Will I get penalized for it and my chances to get in become lower? Any advice would be highly appreciated.
