The first day someone goes to a gym in the UK..?

do they tell him/her what to do? e.g. leg curls 3 set 10 repetition etc...and then they say after a 2-3 weeks you gonna have a different program etc? or when you go to a gym in the uk if you dont ask for a personal trainer, then you simply will have to use the machines/weights by yourself without any guidance?
